Welcome from our Board Chairman, Michele Fiore
-
As a new business to Mesa, Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre found it to our
company’s advantage to become involved in the community as quickly as
possible. An avenue presented to our company almost immediately was the Chamber
of Commerce. Our investment in the Chamber has paid Broadway Palm dividends in
the form of company exposure and acceptance as a company willing to partner with
the business interest of Mesa.
As with most Chamber members, we expected to gain from our relationship with
the Chamber. What we didn’t expect was the diversity of programs and the
respect policy makers have for the organization.
As your chair, I pledge to you to continue to help move your organization on
a path that benefits our diverse membership. With the help of our Board of
Directors we will see to it that your Chamber addresses the issues that
strengthen Mesa’s business environment and gives your business the opportunity
to realize a profit. We will keep you advised of who in government, at the state
and local levels, understand the needs of business and are willing to legislate
accordingly. We will continue to offer you and your employees networking
opportunities and a way to target market to over 2000 businesses.
While we have an outstanding professional staff, the Chamber is a volunteer
driven organization. I urge you to take a personal interest in one or more of
our committees and share with us your talent and leadership. Together we can fit
all the pieces together to accomplish those things that are most effective for
creating a strong economic climate. - Michele Fiore, Broadway Palm Dinner
Theatre - Chairman Board of Directors
Latest
news from the Chamber . . . Editorial
- Support 300, 301, and 302! It may be the vote that sends a needed message to
the outside world that the C.A.V.E. people (Citizens Against Virtually
Everything) are not in charge of Mesa’s future.
The long term risk in this vote is the message we are sending not only about
this project, but to any business interest who may be seeking a place to locate. The state recently announced that it would
enter the competition for Airbus, one of the largest manufacturers of passenger
aircraft in the world. Mesa has the space at Williams to accommodate this
lucrative project, but if you were head of Airbus would you risk the ire of the
C.A.V.E. people and the delays they would create for the project that will
surely require incentives wherever it goes? We may already be red-lined based on
our past, but if the C.A.V.E. people win on the Riverview Project, as they did
on the Rio Salado Project and as they tried to do on the Arts Center, then you
can bet that any future project requiring participation by the City will be
forced to a public vote… a delay that most development will not accept.
Lets look at what the C.A.V.E. people have accomplished in one way or
another! Already mentioned is the $350 million dollar Rio Salado Project with
its promise of hotel, resort, Business Park, convention center, sports facility
and retail. This was much too forward thinking for the narrow minds of the
C.A.V.E. people. They were against the Arts Center but lost their bid to the
broader needs of the quality of life tax. It is speculated that they initiated a
referendum to take the tax off food in an effort to create a financial gap that
would be laid at the feet of the Arts Center. The tax was eliminated but their
goal was not achieved as the Center has opened.
The C.A.V.E. people are persistent if nothing else. The other project to be
funded out of the quality of life tax, the world class Aquatics Center, not only
will it not be built but the C.A.V.E. people in their mission to save us
from ourselves have been successful in requiring a public vote for any sports
related projects such as Hohokam Park, little league fields, community centers,
community pools, art or historical museums, convention centers, or public parks.
The C.A.V.E. people are just not into quality of life amenities that require
public funding.
People have wondered about Mesa’s image as a community. Look who is
generating the ink. It is the C.A.V.E. people, Citizens Against Virtually
Everything, that have the media attention. Is it any wonder that all our
citizens get painted with this negative brush? Our vote could be the start of a
new image, an image that will force the C.A.V.E. people out of the grotto into
the light. An image of a community that deserves to stand beside the 40 other
large metro cities in this country. A place where businesses can flourish and
families can earn wages that provide them the resources needed for a quality
life. - Charlie Deaton, President.
