WELLS FARGO BANK AND EAST VALLEY TRIBUNE HOST GOLF TOURNAMENT The Mesa Chamber of Commerce Annual Fall Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, September 24, 2005 at the Long Bow Golf Club with Wells Fargo Bank and the East Valley Tribune as the title sponsors. A 7am registration and breakfast followed by an 8:00 shotgun start is planned with the awards luncheon wrapping up the morning activities.

The tournament will be a four-ball scramble format with prizes awarded for the lowest team score, closest to the pin, longest drive and a new car for a hole in one. That’s not all, there are many other opportunities to win some great prizes. Tournament sponsors to date are The East Valley Tribune and Wells Fargo Bank as the title sponsors, as well as Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, Northern Trust Bank, Mesa Banner Health Foundation, Superstition Springs Chrysler & Jeep, Superstition Springs Lexus and Southwest Ambulance.

The new Longbow Golf Club was unveiled in the fall of 2003. Following a complete redesign with the addition of a new clubhouse, expanded acreage and a totally revamped practice facility.

Early registration for sponsorship of holes and promotional opportunities is highly recommended. Traditionally our golf events fill up quickly.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE BEAUTIFULLY CHALLENGED (Editorial by Charlie Deaton)   Neither Here Nor There - I didn’t grow up around fine art and I am for the most part to impatient to spend much time in galleries or museums and it is highly unlikely that you will find my lost tux stud under the balcony seat of the last symphony you attended. In fact some might recognize I would more likely be found in the "opry" than at the "opera". But recently I toured the new Mesa Arts Center. That grand architectural wonder that is the poster child for the extreme conservatives of our city. Well let me tell you Bubba that is one fantastic, exciting, venue. You may debate its cost, you may fuss about its colors, and you may not appreciate its architecture or the sheer size of its structure, but once up close and inside even I could imagine how this will change the image of our city from "the most average" to a city of passion, and excitement. People have said that it doesn’t fit our image. They are absolutely right and thank goodness for that. We have been described as "a city with no there, there." Well, let me tell you that this art center is certainly there. When this facility opens in September, not only will Mesa know its there, but all of the Valley will know its there. As these national performers cross our stage the sophisticates and the Bubba’s alike will know we are there, and lets face it, being there is where most of us want to be.

As I mentioned in our last "The Good, The Bad, and the Beautifully Challenged" missive we are heading into the "perfect storm".

Over the next five years our city will undergo incredible change. How that change will manifest itself is up for grabs. But if this art center is a symbol of what we can accomplish we are going to be a proud city. A city that businesses, industries, and families will want to come to. A city that is there.  Charlie Deaton

MESA LEADERSHIP, TRAINING AND DEVLOPMENT - Curriculum Chairs, Terry Benelli and Dina Higgins, have been busy working on the 2005-2006 Mesa Leadership Training & Development Program’s class schedule. This year’s theme is "Regional Equity".  On June 29th, the Curriculum Chairs convened a team to discuss this topic and select guest speakers for the upcoming program. The team included former Curriculum Chair Jo Martin, Jared Langkilde of MCC, Dave Richins of Mesa Grande, Susan Carland Mesa Chamber Board Member and 1982 Alum along with Charlie Deaton of the Mesa Chamber.

When asked why "Regional Equity" was important in leadership development, Curriculum Chair Benelli replied, "Regional collaborations in the East Valley must be part of critical solutions, whether economic strategy or growth and land-use planning; education or social services. Sustaining Mesa’s communities will take leadership whose decisions are made in a regional and equitable context. The boundary lines that separate Mesa from surrounding communities are invisible when it comes to the effect we have on each other".

As a result, here is the Mesa LTD Class Program Calendar:

September 10, 2005 – Mesa City’s Government Role in Regional Issues
